Founder & Executive Chairman

Ben is the energetic and inspirational Founder and Chairman of Africa Metals & Mining Group and non-executive director of JSE-listed Grindrod, a leader in freight and financial services in South Africa. He recently completed 6 years as CEO of Lonmin Plc, the then third largest and only LSE/JSE dual listed PGM producer. During his tenure, he restructured and returned Lonmin to profitability and subsequently consolidated its assets with Sibanye-Stillwater.

A B. Sc (Engineering) Honours graduate, Ben spent the last 28 years and his entire professional career in the mining and energy industries and has extensive management and leadership experience in both underground and surface mining as well as soft and hard rock mining.

A turnaround enthusiast, Ben’s broad experience includes life-of-mine planning, mine management, project management, corporate strategy, business and market development, restructuring, customer relations, exploration, finance, mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, human resources, community and civil society stakeholder engagement, and, national and international government relations, including policy formulation.

His prior roles include: Executive Head (Engineering and Projects) for Anglo American Platinum, the world’s biggest PGMs producer, and CEO of Anglo Coal SA. Ben’s previous board memberships amongst others include Anglo American South Africa and Chairmanship of Richards Bay Coal Terminal, Africa’s largest coal export facility.

Curtis is an international executive educated in the United States including a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University, a Juris Doctor (law degree) and a Bachelor of Science. With more than two decades of experience advising top management of Fortune 500 and FTSE 250 companies and leaders of national governments, his expertise includes corporate and business unit strategy development, implementation planning, executive management, M&A, civil litigation and commercial law.

Curtis’ experience includes a 5-year stint at Patton Boggs, LLP the  “Pennsylvania Avenue” law firm in Washington DC, roles as Director and Partner at top-tier strategy advisory boutiques in the United States and United Kingdom, serving as one of the Managing Directors of the Strategy Practice of a large publicly-traded diversified consulting enterprise and as an independent business advisor working directly with international clients in Africa and Europe and as an external internationally-based, director-level resource for consulting firm projects originating in the US.

He has broad geographical exposure including more than a decade in Europe, 9+ years in Africa, and several years in the US and the Middle East. His previous work encompasses multiple industries including manufacturing, telecommunications, financial institutions and retail amongst others with a specific focus in the last few years on mining and commodities.

AMMG team members have participated in the development of numerous mining assets from concept to production, on time, to scope and on budget.
